The history of the inimitable Ford Mustang is typically broken down into five generations.
First Generation Mustang (1964-1/2 til 1973)
Production of the 1st ever Mustang began in 1964 and the car was unveiled at the New York Car Show that same year. Ford Motor Company only expected to sell about 100,000 cars but in the first 18 months they had already moved over one million units!
Second Generation Mustang (1974–1978)
Due to tight economic restrictions and the oil embargo, the decade of the Seventies was all about fuel efficiency and this meant less power and lower emissions. 1974 saw the Mustang take on the appearance of the Maverick or Pinto but in 1975 at least the 302 engine was reintroduced and more changes in design and performance came with a "Cobra II" model in 1976 and a "King Cobra" in 1978.
Third Generation Mustang (1979–1993)
A coupe and hatchback version continued to be offered and 1983 saw the reintroduction of a popular convertible. The 1985 and 1986 Mustang GT and SVO were adopted largely by muscle car lovers and a new design was wheeled out in 1987.
Fourth Generation Mustang (1994–2004)
This ten year period began with a major facelift and thankfully there was no longer a hatchback available as the Mustang was returned to its roots. Entry models came with a V6 and had either an optional 4-speed automatic or a standard 5-speed manual transmission. 1999 saw new design cues incorporated in the body styling.
Fifth Generation Mustang (2005–2010)
The 5th-gen 'Stang has finally fully returned to what initially put it on the map - the fastback look of the late 60's! In 2006 it was announced at the Detroit Car Show that both the 2007 and 2008 models would have seats made from soybeans. The 2009 saw a new glass roof with a full sunroof option. The 2010 still has a base V6 which will be updated in the 2011 Mustang model year. Shelby, Steeda, Lingenfelter, and Roush lead the way with after-market innovation.
